The Week We Get Back

Finding Joy Between Treatments

Joe’s treatments come every twenty-one days.

Three weeks.

It sounds simple enough when you say it that way, but those weeks each carry their own rhythm. There are the days when treatment takes over, the days when his body is recovering, and then—if we are fortunate—there is a small stretch of time when he begins to feel a little more like himself again.

Usually, we get about one good week.

One week when he feels like getting out of the house. One week when making plans feels possible. One week when life is not shaped entirely around appointments, medications, fatigue, and how he is feeling from one hour to the next.

Today was one of those days.

There was no carefully planned event or special occasion. We simply called some friends and asked if they were available for dinner.

They were.

So we gathered around a table, shared a meal, talked, laughed, and enjoyed being together. For a little while, the treatment schedule faded into the background. We were not patients, caregivers, or people trying to make it through a difficult season.

We were simply friends having dinner.

Afterward, we went back to their home on the lake. We climbed into the boat and took a slow, peaceful ride around the water.

There was something about the stillness of the lake that evening. The quiet hum of the boat. The soft movement of the water. The calm that settles in when no one is rushing and nowhere else needs your attention.

Nothing extraordinary happened.

And yet, it felt extraordinary to us.

When life becomes divided into good days and difficult ones, you begin to understand the value of an ordinary evening. You stop waiting for grand celebrations and start recognizing the gift hidden inside a shared meal, familiar conversation, and a peaceful ride across the water.

That evening did not change what we are walking through. It did not erase the treatment days or make the next round disappear.

But for a few hours, we got a piece of our life back.

And sometimes joy is exactly that.

Not something loud or life-changing.

Just a quiet reminder that even in the middle of the hard days, there are still moments waiting for us.

Moments to gather.

Moments to breathe.

Moments to simply enjoy the week we get back.
